Das Bild zeigt farbcodierte Teilchenbahnen, aufgenommen über drei Sekunden während eines Experiments am 7. März 2001 mit PKE-Nefedov, der ersten naturwissenschaftlichen Nutzlast auf der Internationalen Raumstation ISS. Die Teilchenbahnen starten mit weiß, gehen dann über rot, gelb, grün den Regenbogenfarben folgend nach blau am Ende der Bahn. Aufgenommen wurden die Trajektorien der Mikroteilchen in einem Viertel des hier gezeigten Ausschnitts. Zur besseren Visualisierung der Geometrien der komplexen Plasma Wolke sind die Bahnen an den Hauptkammerachsen gespiegelt worden. Die signifikanten Eigenschaften sind die stabile Lage der Teilchen entlang der Kammerachse (Plasma-Kristallisation), die Konvektion am äußeren Rand und der zentrale teilchenfreie "Hohlraum". Die wichtigsten Experimentparameter sind: Neutralgasdruck: 0.73 mbar, rf-Leistung: 0.24 Watt, Größe der Microteilchen: 6.8 Mikrometer.

The figure shows colour coded microparticle orbits, recorded for a period of three seconds during an experiment carried out on March 7th 2001 with the PKE-Nefedov laboratory, the first natural science experiment on board of the International Space Station ISS. Particle orbits are initially coloured white and then follow the rainbow sequence red to blue. Measurements where carried out in one quarter of the plasma chamber, and using the known symmetry properties they were then extended for better understanding. Significant features of the measurements  are the stable plasma crystallisation zone along the chamber axis, the convection regimes and the central void. The most important experiment parameters are: neutral gas pressure: 0.73 mbar, radio-frequency power: 0.24 Watt, particle size: 6.8 micrometer.
