EVN PC Meeting and Mini-symposium on VLBI and high-resolution astronomy in the next decade MPE, Garching June 26-27, 2008
 
 
Venue:
The PC meeting will be held on Friday, June 27 at the Max-Planck Institut for Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) in Garching, near Munich.

The Garching Campus of Munich's Technische Universitaet (TUM) is host of a number of Astronomical Institutions. On its southernmost end are the headquarters of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Next to it the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysik (MPA), which is directly connected to the MPE.
On the northern side of the campus is located the newly established Excellence Cluster Universe, which shares a building with the ESO ALMA division. A map of the campus can be found here or here.

On Thursday, June 26, a scientific Mini-symposium on VLBI and high-resolution astronomy in the next decade will be held at MPE. More information about this event can be found here.

Access:
From Munich (downtown)

* public transport from Munich city center:
- take subway U6 direction Garching-Forschungszentrum (about 25 min)
* by car :
- take Autobahn Munich direction Nuernberg or Airport,
- leave at exit "Garching Nord",
- follow signs "Forschungsgelaende" and signs to institutes (MPE : Entry IPP gate).
- have a look at the street map

From Munich Airport

* public transport, option 1:
- take S-Bahn S8 direction Nannhofen (Munich city center; runs every 20 minutes)
- leave at third stop : Ismaning
- take Bus no. 230 to Garching, Technische Universitaet (runs every 20-40 minutes most of the day (Mo.-Fr.), timetable here)
- exit Forschungszentrum (about 19 min; close to IPP gate)
- have a look at the street map
* public transport, option 2:
- take S-Bahn S1 direction Marienplatz (Munich city center; runs every 20 minutes)
- leave at second stop : Neufahrn
- take Bus no. 690 to Garching, Technische Universitaet (NOTE: runs every 40 minutes ONLY!, timetable here)
- exit Forschungszentrum (about 16 min; close to IPP gate)
- have a look at the street map

* Taxi :
- takes about 15-20 minutes and costs about 35 EUR (~ 50 US Dollar)

From the Hotels in Garching
* Public transport from Garching center (a map of Garching can be found here):
- take subway U6 direction Garching-Forschungszentrum (one stop, about 5 min)

Tickets can be purchased in the airport just outside the S-Bahn station. A single ride is about 6,50 ; buying a stripe-ticket (Streifenkarte) with 10 stripes (10) saves you about 10% of the price. You need to cancel 6 stripes for the whole trip.

Please note that at the IPP gate you will have to be identified by security guards. I will provide them with a list of all PC members beforehand, so that you will only have to show a ID card to get in.

A block reservation has been made in the Hotel Koenig Ludwig II., in Garching.To get to the Hotel from the Airport with public transport:
- take S-Bahn S8 direction Nannhofen (Munich city center; runs every 20 minutes)

Social Events:
On Thursday evening, weather permitting, we will try to organize a dinner in a typical Biergarten. On Friday, the EVN PC dinner will be in the Kaisergarten restaurant, Kaiserstr. 34, in the middle of the Schwabing neighbourhood. The restaurant is located at walking distance from the U-bahn stop "Muenchener Freiheit" on the U6 line.
