Mechanical Development and Design
The Mechanical Development/Construction Department supports the experimental science departments of the Institute in the development and construction of scientific instruments.
Our responsibilities include not only the concept development and detailed design of astronomical instruments using state-of-the-art 2D/3D CAD systems and finite element methods, we also provide supportive system engineering in all development phases of the project, take on tasks such as product assurance and quality management and supervise internal and external manufacturing.
In close cooperation with our own workshops and test facilities, as well as with partners from the aerospace industry, we are involved in integration, verification and testing through to the commissioning of experiments on site, e.g. for satellite integration or on large telescopes.
We have our own in-house test laboratory for vibration tests and thermal/vacuum tests.
